Taking responsible journalism to the next level

Monterrey, Mexico, September 2, 2008

CEMEX participated with the 7th annual "New Journalism Award" (Premio Nuevo Periodismo CEMEX + FNPI) to encourage high quality journalism in Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula.


Every year, CEMEX, in partnership with the Fundación Nuevo Periodismo Iberoamericano, recognizes journalists with socially responsible reporting styles from Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula through the "New Journalism Award CEMEX + FNPI" under categories like text, photography, internet, radio, and television. The award promotes integrity, exemplary citizenship, and the media's contribution to social development and has come to represent one of the most prestigious journalism awards in Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula.

Text and photography submissions were evaluated by an international panel of judges.

Knowledge: Equipo JC Online (Brazil)
Project description: An interactive online report about life with a disability in Brazil - the report is also formatted the visually and hearing impaired.
Cultural Diversity - Carol Schoihet (Chile)
Project description: Investigation about the life of transsexuals in Chile, using their stories to science the science behind transgender issues.
Peace - Natalia Acevedo (Colombia)
Project description: A series of stories about victims of political "disappearances" and their families in Antioquia, Colombia.
Sustainability - Equipo TV Globo (Brazil)
Project description: A broadcast piece about the conflict caused by deforestation in the Amazon and it's effect on local indigenous communities.

Inaki Gabilondo
Iñaki Gabilondo (Spain) receives this year's Career Tribute Award

Finally, Iñaki Gabilondo (Spain), was granted this year's Career Tribute Award for his lifelong dedication to high quality journalism in Spain through radio and television. He has taken his responsibility as an opinion leader seriously and considers his role in journalism more as that of a public servant.
