Barcelona, Spain, October 7, 2008

Launched at the 2008 World Conservation Congress in Barcelona, the latest book in CEMEX's conservation series, A Climate for Life: Meeting the Global Challenge, is a visually compelling and comprehensive publication that outlines the actions needed to stabilize the world's climate.

Eminent Harvard biologist E.O. Wilson and actor Harrison Ford co-author the book's foreword and note that "the central message of A Climate for Life, [is that] the global environment cannot be stabilized and restored piece-by-piece and step-by-step. Its deterioration has to halt on all fronts, through intelligent and concerted action…"

The combined expertise of the contributing authors encompasses all areas of society related to climate change. The authors explore important issues regarding climate change and present a clear plan of action. Speedy adoption of the recommendations, which span policy, technology, and market innovations, could stimulate the global economy, while providing for the well-being and security of humanity.

Some key points:
  • Climate destabilization poses a catastrophic long-term threat to humanity.
  • Deforestation and degradation of tropical forests each year is responsible for 20 to 25 percent of total global greenhouse gas emissions (more than from the world's cars, trucks, planes, ships, and railroads combined).
  • Any effort to mitigate climate change must account for the emissions from tropical forest deforestation and make it a centerpiece of the solution.

This book offers a range of solutions for stabilizing the world's climate right now.

Armando García, Executive Vice President for Development, commented, "At CEMEX, we have learned that it's important not only to positively address environmental issues worldwide, but also to be pro-active in conserving nature and biodiversity. Our series of Conservation Books, published over the last 15 years, plays a significant role in our conservation strategy. We believe that the more people understand about biodiversity and climate change, the more they will be moved to take action."

A Climate for Life is published in partnership with Conservation International and the International League of Conservation Photographers. Beginning in 1993, A Climate for Life is the 16th book in CEMEX's Conservation Book Series, which aims to inspire and raise awareness for the conservation of nature.
