During the first weekend of May, over 1,000 CEMEX employees, their families, and other invitees participated in over 20 activities in support of CEMEX Bird Days, organized in cooperation with the Latvian Ornithological Society, a non-governmental organization that represents BirdLife International in Latvia since 1994.
CEMEX signed a ten-year agreement with BirdLife International, the largest network of independent conservation organizations in the world. We work with them to implement conservation measures at our quarries around the world and support wider initiatives to conserve and raise awareness of wild birds and biodiversity.
The participants went on bird-watching excursions along with ornithologists (specialists in the study of birds) and participated in constructing bird homes to help protect the avian biodiversity in the region.
Approximately 500 bird homes were constructed during the two days while many other participants went on various excursions, including a special trip for CEMEX employees to the Satini Lakes near the Broceni cement plant.
The event was very well received by all participants, who expressed interest about further activities organized by CEMEX in cooperation with the Latvian Ornithologists Society.
This national event highlights CEMEX’s efforts to collaborate with local communities to protect the biodiversity near our operations, in support of our global Sustainable Development Strategy.
