Hundreds of low-income families in the Dominican city of San Pedro de Macoris will now have access to building materials thanks to Patrimonio Hoy, CEMEX's ground-breaking savings and credit program that gives people an opportunity to build, repair, or expand their homes that would usually be beyond their economic means.
The occasion was celebrated with an inauguration ceremony attended by several distinguished guests, among them Governor Alcibíades Tavárez, Mayor Ramón Echavarría and CEMEX in Dominican Republic President Carlos Jacks.
"Guided by the values that identify us as a company, our idea is to gradually extend this important social progress initiative throughout the country, giving priority to the communities surrounding our operations. This is evidence of our commitment with sustainable development in the Dominican Republic," says Jacks.
Patrimonio Hoy was born a decade ago in Mexico, and is currently active in Colombia, Nicaragua and Costa Rica, benefitting nearly 300,000 families. Thanks to this initiative, CEMEX has won international awards for promoting sustainable development and fostering the reduction of poverty, including the 2006 World Business Award and the 2009 HABITAT Award, both given by the United Nations.
Our Patrimonio Hoy program, now with a growing presence in the Dominican Republic, highlights CEMEX's worldwide efforts to promote access to housing and infrastructure as part of our Sustainable Development Strategy.
