On July 13, CEMEX, together with BirdLife International, spoke at the 1st Global Business of Biodiversity symposium in London about their partnership and the methodology applied, through a Biodiversity Scoping Study, to prioritize biodiversity action in the company.
The symposium unites leaders and experts from government, business, and non-governmental organizations operating across all industrial sectors to give insight into how business and enterprise have a huge role to play in the conservation of biodiversity.
Marco Bedoya, Environmental Manager of CEMEX, was a featured speaker during the symposium’s Master Class titled “Business and Biodiversity Partnerships: Strategic Approaches to Biodiversity Priority Setting and for building Institutional Relationships that deliver mutual value exchange."
In December 2007, CEMEX signed a 10-year global agreement with BirdLife International, the leading authority on the status and conservation of birds and their habitats. As part of this collaboration, the two organizations are working to refine CEMEX’s biodiversity-related strategies, policies, and practices – and also advising on how to implement conservation projects at operational sites. The Biodiversity Scoping Study prioritizes CEMEX sites in terms of biodiversity sensitivity and opportunities, and is the cornerstone of CEMEX’s biodiversity strategy.
As part of the study, CEMEX has mapped over 500 cement and aggregates sites worldwide against 95,000 important areas of biodiversity. The sites are categorized according to their proximity to important biodiversity areas and their biodiversity management practices.
CEMEX’s participation in this worldwide forum highlights the company’s strong commitment with biodiversity as part of its Global Sustainability Strategy.
