Bringing the beach into the city of Rouen in northern France

Summer 2010 arrived and the city of Rouen in the Normandy region of northern France transforms itself into a seaside resort for the event “Rouen sur Mer” (Rouen on the Sea) in which a beach is installed on ‘the lower docks on the left side of the Seine River during the whole month of July.

The 1,450 tons of sand required to create the beach were offered and delivered by the “Société Parisienne des Sablières” (SPS), a joint venture between the CEMEX in France aggregates division and the GSM company, an Italcementi subsidiary. The sand was delivered via CEMEX’s fluvial transportation system.

The beach runs for 300 meters and occupies 18,000 square meters, offering a beautiful view of the city’s downtown and its cathedral. For this second edition, the beach is twice as large compared to 2009.

Thousands of inhabitants and visitors take advantage of this opportunity to share great moments and have fun by enjoying the sun, the fresh water, and the myriad of cultural and entertainment events happening across the month such as musical concerts, dance classes, beach football and other sports tournaments, game activities for kids, among many others.

Rouen on the Sea 2010 is also an ecological expression: the 1,450 tons of sand are meant to be reused. This partnership with SPS not only reinforces the know-how of both companies but it also strengthens their commitment to sustainability. SPS is a signatory of the Professional Aggregates Industry for the Environment Protection Charter and is also ISO14001 certified.

CEMEX’s active role in projects like this Rouen on the Sea event is one of many initiatives that highlight CEMEX’s commitment to make a positive contribution to society, in accordance with our global sustainability strategy.
