Well-known artists from the Americas led by stage star Bianca Marroquin united on Broadway for a concert titled "To Mexico from New York With Love", in order to raise funds for the victims of hurricane Alex in the northern Mexican State of Nuevo Leon.
The funds will be put to use through CEMEX's UN award-winning Centros Productivos de Autoempleo, an initiative consisting of community centers where low-income families can produce basic building materials for the construction or expansion of their homes. The donation will help add to the 200 basic-need homes that have already been built through the program.
"I hope our voices carry our love and spirit to Mexico tonight," said Marroquin, the first Mexican woman to have a starring role on Broadway. "I hope they know they are not alone, that we are with them."
The concert, which took place at Manhattan's Merkin Concert Hall, featured nearly 20 artists, most of them currently performing on Broadway, including American Idol season six winner Jordin Sparks and Mexicans Gabriela Garcia, an international spoken word artist and award-winning poet and Ruben Flores, stage and screen actor.
The two-hour show began with a video showing the heavy damage caused by the hurricane which hit northeastern Mexico on June 30, 2010. It was followed by each artist introducing themselves by singing romantic boleros as pictures of Mexico's picturesque landscapes were projected in the background. A fterwards, the artists and attendees united by their love for Mexico mingled at a cocktail.
