CEMEX has supplied all ready-mix concrete for the Château La Coste Art Center designed by recognized Japanese architect Tadao Ando, who specializes in creating art using concrete. The center is dedicated to art and French gastronomy. Floating upon an artificial lake, this construction hosts an exposition gallery, kitchens, meeting spaces and subterranean parking.
Ando is one of the leaders of the post-modern school of architecture. He has won several architecture prizes, among them, the famous Pritzker (1995) and the Alvar Aalto medal obtained in 1985. The center is located upon the wine domain of the Château La Coste (castle La Coste), owned by the famous Irish businessman Mac Killien, near the city of Aix-en-Provence in the Mediterranean region.
The company Poggia Provence was responsible for the construction of the site, having already participated in other projects within the domain. CEMEX was selected to provide 5,000 cubic meters of Advanci® Basic ready-mix concrete. This specialty concrete reduces vibrations and has a faster setting time than regular concrete. These properties were crucial for the very specific and artistic nature of the construction; the art center has the shape of a ship, with a razor-sharp front edge.
Timber supports were prepared inside of the boards, cleaned and lubricated with wax in order to adequately cast the ready-mix concrete and create a series of juxtaposed and geometrically organized Japanese "tatami" walls.
