CEMEX was the provider of choice of ready-mix concrete for the casting of a water reservoir at the Carmel Port in the city of Haifa in Israel. In order to fulfill the customer's requirements for the 100 cubic meter pour, CEMEX had to take various technical challenges into account.
CEMEX had to cast high-strength self-compacting concrete (SSC) in a manner that would allow continuous flow until all walls of the reservoir were cast. The company also had to begin pouring from the top of the reservoir, at a height of seven meters and ensure that water penetration would not exceed 25 millimeters.
In order to prevent the concrete from free falling from that height, tin pipes were installed before casting. At a pouring rate of 0.5 meters per hour, the concrete that had been cast in the first stage had time to dry while the pouring continued, thus reducing pressure and preventing cracks and water penetration.
The cast lasted about 15 hours, with the concrete flowing slowly and continuously through the pipes. After the reservoir was filled with water, no water penetration was detected. The project was considered a success and has led to CEMEX being chosen as supplier for other similar projects in the country.
