CEMEX begins construction effort on employees homes in Haiti

In commemoration of the first anniversary of the tragic earthquake on January 12, 2010. CEMEX in Haiti held a ceremony in Croix des Bouquets, to announce the start of construction of a housing project for its employees in the country who were left homeless. The project in its initial stage will consist in building around 30 houses, in which the company will invest USD$ 350 thousand dollars.


The ceremony was led by Luis Miguel Cantu, President for CEMEX in the Caribbean Region, Mexico's ambassador in Haiti, Luis Manuel López M, Leslie Volt, an adviser to President René Préval in rebuilding the country and Ignacio Muñoz, Director of CEMEX's operations in Haiti, and other company officials.

Luis Miguel Cantu said "Thanks to the solidarity of our personnel, CEMEX employees in Haiti will finally have decent housing that will significantly improve their lives. Today we see the start of a major construction project for our employees who lost their homes in the last earthquake".

"As part of a coordinated effort to help meet the needs of the country and contribute to its reconstruction, CEMEX expanded the scope of our social programs to include additional regional outreach by supporting organizations with part of the funding required to provide decent housing for low income families who lost their homes " he said.

CEMEX and its employees donated US$620.000, from joint contributions of the company and more than 2,500 employees in 29 countries, for the efforts to support Haiti. From the total amount, more than US$150,000 dollars have been used in humanitarian aid for earthquake victims, and around US$65,000 dollars have been provided in support to NGOS's such as Habitat for Humanity.

CEMEX is a leading supplier of cement in Haiti, with 115 employees in the country working in three maritime terminals and a sales office that serves a market demand of 1.2 million metric tons. Two of CEMEX's marine terminals are located in the area of Port-au-Prince and another in the northern city of Haitien.
