CEMEX in Puerto Rico’s Ponce cement plant was given the Chairman’s Safety Performance Award for outstanding safety record by the Portland Cement Association (PCA) at an awards ceremony in Chicago. Cement plants were judged according to the number of work-related injuries and illnesses per 100 hours worked.
The Ponce cement plant has gone without a single accident since August 2009. Its operations include all traditional cement production processes such as aggregates extraction, raw materials milling, calcination process, and cement grinding carried out by almost 300 employees.
Portland cement plants from throughout the United States and Canada participated in the competition in three categories, designated by the number of hours employees worked collectively. The Ponce plant was in the 190,000 hours and under division.
“Working to continuously improve safety and health in the workplace, employees at the CEMEX in Puerto Rico plant set a standard for safety excellence that promotes safety and health protection through the year,” said Brian McCarthy, PCA president and CEO.
Employee safety is of utmost importance at CEMEX. The company is committed to identifying and reducing any safety risks associated with its global operations by improving how it reinforces safe behavior with employees and strengthening the accountability of management.
