CEMEX has provided nearly 40,000 m3 of specialty concrete for the Hodariyat Bridge superstructure construction in the city of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. The new bridge is set to be 1.3 kilometers long and will connect the Abu Dhabi western littoral to the Hodariyat Island coastline.
Underwater construction of such a massive structure has required that CEMEX overcome many obstacles to maintain a steady supply of early strength concrete for the project. The company sent out its concrete mixer trucks on barges in order to reach the different columns where the concrete has been poured. In addition, CEMEX was the exclusive supplier of concrete for precast segments comprising the bridge’s main spans, built in a balanced cantilever.
The bridge’s crossing provides a 29-meter vertical clearance for the 170 meter-wide navigation channel. The superstructure includes six lanes of traffic and two walkways. It consists of a 36 meter-wide single cell concrete box girder with stiffening struts inside and outside the box. The foundations consist of 1.2-meter and 1.5-meter diameter drilled shafts connected into the bedrock.
The project is scheduled to be finished in September 2011. By that time, CEMEX will have provided a total of 43,000 cubic meters of specialty concrete.
Through the development of chemical admixtures solutions, researchers at CEMEX’s Global Center for Technology and Innovation in Biel, Switzerland design special concretes that fulfill the construction industry’s increasingly demanding performance requirements. CEMEX offers a special concrete portfolio, comprised of such products as ultra rapid hardening concrete, crack-resistant/low shrinkage concrete, self-consolidating concrete (SCC), architectural concrete, pervious concrete, and a number of others.
