CEMEX in China won the highest honor, The Golden Carbon Award, at the first environmental protection innovation ideas competition, held at Qingdao Technological University. CEMEX’s entry in the “Environment-Friendly Building Solutions” category of the business enterprises group competed in multiple rounds of evaluation and was one of only 21 teams to reach the finals.
The competition, co-organized by the local committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and the local Environment Protection Bureau of Sifang District, Qingdao City, was open to elementary school children, college students, and business enterprises. The purpose of the event was to increase social awareness for environmental preservation and protection, and was developed around the theme: “mutually creating ecological civilization, sharing a green future.”
“Eden,” the CEMEX entry, signified, “a bright green future that people are dreaming of.” The work was based on CEMEX’s sustainability model and environment-friendly building solutions. It was constructed using eco-friendly products such as recycled aggregate concrete, light weight aggregate concrete, and pervious concrete, symbolizing CEMEX’s commitment to sustainable development.
While speaking on behalf of all of the competing enterprises at the opening ceremony, Lance Liu, general manager of CEMEX in China, stated, “Enterprises should proactively improve awareness of environmental protection, assume social responsibility, and lead the public—actions which are of significant importance in advancing the work of environmental preservation.”
CEMEX believes that education is a powerful tool in helping communities to address the challenges of sustainability, and consistently works with schools, universities, and other institutions to promote opportunities for ecological education and outreach.
