In 1999 CEMEX signed an agreement with the Barcelona University through the Fundation Bosch i Gimpera to explore the restoration of its quarry in Alcanar (Tarragona, Spain). This ambitious project followed a structured program in harmony with the current ecosystems, the terrain's morphology, and the geological, weather, and landscape characteristics of the area. The techniques and processes were used in a way that the company could employ them later in the same type of quarries.
In a first phase of the process, the contour of the terrain was recovered and the organic part of the ground was refurbished, using barrier crush techniques and vegetal soil. This was a basic step to control the erosion caused by the rain and wind in the first stages of the quarry regeneration. The vegetation in the restored area were planted through a technique called hydro-sowing, in which native plants and bushes were used to ensure the best integration of the restored area.
Soon, a water pump system is expected to be fixed in the high ground of the quarry in order to install drip irrigation by sectors and, thus, help the vegetation grow. Small ponds will be created so the surrounding fauna can have a secure water supply.
