Monterrey, Mexico, October 2, 2007 - CEMEX, in partnership with the Fundación Nuevo Periodismo Iberoamericano and, as a special occasion for this year, the Universal Forum of Cultures - Monterrey 2007, hosted the sixth annual ceremony for the New Journalism Award (Premio Nuevo Periodismo CEMEX + FNPI) at Monterrey's MARCO art museum. The award serves to promote and recognize high quality journalism in Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula. The event was open to the public, and various employees from CEMEX Central were in attendance. This year, 644 pieces were submitted from 25 countries in the categories of internet, radio, and television. Throughout the years, this competition has come to represent and award only the best in the field of journalism for Latin American and Iberian reporters. The contest has grown significantly in all categories.

A detailed investigation uncovers exorbitant use of electricity in some of Buenos Aires' poorest neighborhoods by clandestine clothing sweatshops. Undocumented Bolivian and Peruvian workers face horrendous working conditions for the benefit of large multinational clothing manufacturers.

Hollman Morris (Colombia) Toribío - La guerra en el Cauca (Canal Uno - Colombia)
Report shows how rural communities such as Toribío, Jambaló, and Tacueyó in southwestern Colombia, along with regional natives, live in fear under the constant threat of displacement and the life-endangering effects of the war between the guerrilla military, paramilitary troops, the national guard, and the police. Morris' work is evidence that the community has become the war's only victim.
