Germany and the use of alternative fuels

Germany leads the way in the use of alternative fuels; the country's cement industry provides an important waste disposal route. For example, alternative fuels comprised of 73% domestic refuse account for 48% of the total energy needs at our Rüdersdorf cement plant. The plant is located in an area that produces approximately 3 million metric tons of garbage a year.

CEMEX's alternative fuel project is actively reducing our company's energy use from carbon-based fuels, which lowers our CO2 emissions. By replacing coal with alternative fuel in our kiln, CEMEX saved approximately 200,000 tons of coal last year, improving our competitiveness dramatically. Furthermore, the use of alternative fuel saves natural resources and contributes to another important social issue - the increasing saturation of landfills with waste.

The next step will be for the Rüdersdorf plant to receive its electricity supply from a special power plant, operating solely off the use of alternative fuels, placed directly beside the cement plant. It's estimated that an additional 220,000 tons of waste will be incinerated in the power plant per year after it's commissioned in just a few months.

At our Kollenbach plant, alternative fuels such as animal meal and domestic wastes make up 53% of our total fuel.
