Creating family life for tsunami orphans
Late 2004 brought calamity to Southeast Asia in the form of a devastating tsunami that took the lives of countless people. As part of a larger community effort to help, CEMEX responded with funds and resources to support the construction of an SOS Children's Village in Meulaboh, Aceh.
The village will provide shelter and aid for children affected by the tsunami. A corner stone ceremony was held in Meulaboh on November 9, 2006, as part of the official ground-breaking event.

During the event, many local officials alongside a few CEMEX representatives marked the ceremony by laying the first stone of the project. Letters, drawings, poetry and artwork from CEMEX families and children around the word expressing hopes and well wishes for the prosperity of the village project were placed below the first stone.
The enormity of this natural disaster struck the hearts of many people around the world. The SOS Children's Village holds the relief of children as the highest priority as they are the most vulnerable group in any crisis. On March 4, 2005, CEMEX announced it would donate US$2.1 million to help SOS Children's Villages build a children's shelter in Meulaboh, Aceh, and to provide applicable maintenance costs for 4 years.
SOS Children's Villages, a 13-time Nobel Peace Prize nominee, is the largest non-governmental, non-denominational child welfare organization in the world, devoted to giving children who have lost their parents or who are no longer able to live with their parents a permanent home and a stable environment.
