Our Global Energy business unit focuses on promoting and developing strategic projects to ensure access to and use of renewable energy sources in our operations worldwide. Employing renewable energy sources in our operations not only complements and enhances our existing efforts to reduce carbon emissions, but it also makes business sense as it represents economically attractive sources of energy in the countries where we operate.

As a result of our strategy to transition to clean energy sources, during 2019, 30% of our cement operations’ power supply came from renewable sources. We currently lead our industry in this effort, and we have established an ambitious 2030 goal of 40% of our projected consumption.

Wind Farm

Renewable energy is increasingly available and, in some markets, it’s sometimes cheaper or becoming very competitive with fossil fuel generation. However, production unpredictability and intermittency from reliance on factors such as wind and sunlight mean that renewables have not yet been able to fully replace fossil fuel generation. 

Consequently, CEMEX partnered with Energy Vault SA to develop an energy storage technology that enables renewables to deliver around-the-clock baseload power for less than the cost of fossil fuels. The solution is not dependent on land topography or specific geology underground. CEMEX is committed to taking steps like these to overcome adoption barriers and continue pushing our renewable energy usage rate to higher levels in the future.
