Sustainable Sourcing
Sustainable Sourcing
Sustainability is a crucial element of our business model that is embedded throughout our operations. Consistent with CEMEX's commitment, we continue integrating sustainability into our supply chain.
Our company actively contributes to sustainable development and continually seeks ways to reduce the environmental impact of our operations and products. We are dedicated to responsible corporate governance, providing safe, healthy, and fair workplaces for our employees, and bringing about positive change in our society.
We strive to increase the mutual benefit derived from our relationships with our business partners, including our more than 70,000 suppliers of goods and services— from IT service providers to haulage companies who transport our products.
We treat our suppliers fairly, providing them with equal opportunities to contract with us. Our procurement teams meet with suppliers to strengthen our relationships and listen to their concerns. By hiring a high proportion of local suppliers in each country of operation and offering them development programs, we foster economic growth in the communities where we operate.
We Help Create Sustainable Communities through Local Sourcing
We believe that local sourcing is, in and of itself, a sustainable business practice. It creates jobs, which in turn stimulate local economies, while developing new skills among local workers.
Whenever feasible, we support small, locally based suppliers everywhere we operate. In fact, in 2016, we made 95 percent of our purchases from locally and nationally based suppliers.
Our procurement teams participate regularly in events to identify new, local suppliers, particularly small-to-medium-sized enterprises.
We also provide training and development programs to help suppliers strengthen their business practices and integrate sustainability into their business processes.

Supplier Sustainability Program
The objective of our Supplier Sustainability Program is to ensure the promotion and recognition of sustainable practices across our supply chain by extending CEMEX’s sustainability commitment, practices, and beliefs to our suppliers.
Our Program is aimed to combine social and environmental factors with financial considerations when making sourcing decisions.
FOUR PHASES OF THE PROGRAM
Phase I. Communication
Communicate CEMEX sustainable commitment, practices, and beliefs to suppliers and internal staff through the following activities:
- Develop sustainable specifications related to contracts for such items as alternative fuels, raw materials, gardening, pallets, recycled paper, and PPE
- Create a Sustainable Procurement Communication Channel for sharing ideas, reporting questionable practices, and questions and answers
- Continue the communication effort by launching specific communication campaigns related to sustainability (e.g., posters, banners, etc.).
Phase II. Evaluation
As part of our own commitment to sustainable development, we constantly evaluate that of our supply chain partners. In this spirit, we engaged with sustainable supply management firms to monitor the environmental, social and governance performance of CEMEX suppliers.
Phase III. Policies
Inform all suppliers of CEMEX basic sustainability requirements through clauses within policies and contracts.
Develop specific policies that will include aspects of sustainability according to the principles of the United Nations Global Compact, specific policies in our purchase orders and our Code of Ethics and Business Conduct.

Phase IV. Scorecard
Incorporate sustainable concepts into a scorecard to track and reward sustainable suppliers.
This scorecard helps to evaluate suppliers and inform them of our customers’ needs from CEMEX, in order to establish a certification mechanism for suppliers.
Sustainable supply chain management is a continuous process
